Colliery Alick wins Grand Champion at California's First
Mountain and Moorland Show!

Adrienne and Alick at Brookside 2006

On September 2, 2006 the Welsh Pony and Cob Association of California sponsored the first Mountain and Moorland (M&M) show in the Golden State. Classes included M&M Ponies younger than 3 years, M&M Ponies 3 years and older, and Ridden M&M Ponies. Davidson Dales entered our 10-year-old stallion Colliery Alick and our 4-year-old mare Bickerdike by Design (Dessie) in the 3-year-old class. The two Dales entries competed against 9 other ponies, including 5 Connemara Ponies, 2 Highland Ponies, a British Shetland and a Welsh Pony. The class was judged by Mr. Simon Bigley from Llanarth, Hereford, Wales in the United Kingdom.

Alick, with his handler Adrienne Grasso, won the class, with Dessie taking second, beating a British Shetland stallion and a Connemara stallion. Alick then went on to compete against all other 18 M&M ponies to be named M&M Grand Champion! The win allowed Alick to enter Mr. Bigley's BEST IN SHOW class where he competed against the top 3 Welsh Ponies of the day. Alick was honored to be seen in such grand company!

Both Alick and Dessie then competed in the Ridden Mountain and Moorland class against 5 other entries. Dessie, ridden by Mr. Roger Cleverly, won a second place ribbon after the blue was awarded to the Connemara Stallion MGRM Brigadoon. Davidson Dales couldn't be more pleased with Alick and Dessie, who so ably demonstrated the beauty and talent of the Dales Pony breed.

Our heartfelt thanks to Kathryn Rayner Freeman for doing the tremendous amount of work of organizing this first WPCSA Mountain & Moorland show!
